Paddle Together for a Trash-Free Ocean: Canoe Clean Up at the 2024 Ocean Revival Festival!

Denpasar, 16 November 2024 - The action to pick up trash for a cleaner Bali, the Canoe Clean Up activity was successfully held as part of the Ocean Revival Festival with Udayana Akt'21 Communication Science.

Concern for the fate of the ocean ecosystem, which is increasingly neglected due to piles of plastic waste every day, became the starting point for the formation of the Ocean Revival Festival. As an opening, the Canoe Clean Up activity, which was successfully held on November 16 2024, is the first story in the journey of the struggle to revive the marine ecosystem in Bali.

The Canoe Clean Up was held at Wana Segara Kertih Kedonganan, Kuta District, Badung, Bali. As the name suggests, this clean-up action was carried out in various areas of mangrove forest waters from the coast to interior areas using canoes as a means of transportation.

The activity started at 09.00 WITA with a briefing and guidance regarding safety mechanisms in using canoes. After that, each participant climbed into a canoe filled with two people in one canoe. Not only are they equipped with safety equipment, each participant is also given tools in the form of hooks and sacks to pick up rubbish. The waste cleaning area is carried out along the waters of the mangrove forest to collect plastic waste stuck between the mangrove roots. This cleaning activity by canoe took approximately 1 hour. After dealing with water and rubbish for quite a long time, the participants then returned to land to collect the rubbish they had obtained.

The Canoe Clean Up action, which involved more than 20 participants, was carried out with high enthusiasm and enthusiasm. Participants consist of various backgrounds such as environmentalists, influencers, KOLs, and of course communication science students. While paddling a canoe along the waters and collecting plastic waste that floats or is trapped in the mangrove area. This activity not only makes a direct contribution to ocean cleanliness, this activity is also a symbol of the importance of collaboration in protecting the environment.

The participants in this activity, Jemima (19) and Indira (19) expressed their enthusiasm for participating in this activity. "It was really exciting, and it was also my first time riding a canoe. "Apart from that, we are embraced so we don't feel confused," he said when interviewed on Saturday (16/11/2024). Furthermore, according to them, the Canoe Clean Up activity is very useful for raising awareness among the younger generation to care more about the environment.

The management of Wana Segara Kertih also expressed his gratitude for the Canoe Clean Up activity at the Ocean Festival. "I am very happy and grateful for this Ocean Revival Festival activity because it can encourage young people and students to preserve the environment, because mangroves are very useful for life" , said Nyoman Sutara on Saturday (16/11/2024). Furthermore, the management also hopes that in the future there will be a regular schedule for mangrove cleaning activities. "All young people must care," he continued.

The results of this action did not disappoint. Within a few hours, the participants managed to collect 22 kilograms of plastic waste. This waste will then be handed over to the management for sorting and recycling.

Through this activity, in general the hope for a cleaner and healthier ocean future becomes more real. Canoe Clean Up under the spirit of Ocean Revival is not only about cleaning the ocean, but also about instilling collective awareness that every small action can bring big change.
