Instilling Digital Media Literacy from an Early Age, to Prevent Crime in Cyberspace

Wednesday, December 6 2023, Digital Citizenship Community Service activities took place at SD Negeri 2 Batuan, Sukawati, Gianyar. This activity was carried out by students of the Communication Science study program, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Udayana University, semester 5, in order to provide learning about Digital Media Literacy for Children. This community service regarding Digital Media Literacy has two teaching topics, namely cyber bullying for grade 6 elementary school students and digital privacy for grade 5 elementary school students. This teaching activity was attended by all students with a total of 32 people for grade 5 and 37 people for grade 6 elementary school.

Teaching material about cyber bullying starts from the literal understanding of bullying. Then it continues with the definition of cyber bullying and examples of cyber bullying are given. Apart from that, the material also continues by explaining the impact of cyber bullying, as well as preventive measures and reporting mechanisms for preventing cyber bullying. Drama or direct examples are also included in the learning, so that students understand better and don't get bored of listening to the material provided by the teachers. Because most of these students also have social media platforms, the material presented is very closely related to their daily lives. This also anticipates them to pay more attention to the digital media they use, so as not to become perpetrators of cyber bullying crimes.

The second material is about personal data security in the digital world. The material provided is about the meaning of data privacy, then also explains the impact that would occur if personal data were leaked. In providing real examples of personal data leakage, the teachers also provided a short drama to facilitate students' understanding. Not only from dramas, fellow teachers also show several educational videos to protect privacy data from being hacked or hacked. After a fairly solid material delivery session, the students in grade 5 of elementary school were also invited to play games and make videos together, so as not to feel bored.

The teachers explain the material on cyber bullying and data privacy, in language that is easy to understand, and use quiz or game methods to review the material that has been given. What's even more exciting is that students who answer questions from the material that has been explained will receive prizes in the form of notebooks and pencil boxes from fellow teachers. However, all grade 5 and 6 elementary school students are still given prizes in the form of snacks, as a form of appreciation for listening and listening to the learning material provided.

Not only do they use learning methods using language that is easy to understand, the teachers from Communication Science students also invite students to use jargon and chants, to increase their enthusiasm and enthusiasm. After the learning and games sessions were finished, each teacher in a different class held a joint documentation session.

The hope is that by holding this community service activity in the form of teaching, it can be an early step in making the younger generation aware of the importance of being smart in digital literacy, so that it can motivate them not to be arbitrary in using digital platforms. Therefore, let's be smart in using social media or other online platforms, so as not to harm yourself or others.
