Participation of UNUD Communication Science Study Program in The 4th International Conference On Communication And New Media Studies (COMNEWS) 2023.
The 4th International Conference On Communication And New Media Studies (COMNEWS) 2023 was held which was held by the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Multimedia Nusantara University in collaboration with the Communication Studies Program at Udayana University on 25 & 26 October 2023, with the theme "Rethinking post-digital society: Imagining the future of media, communication and sustainability”.
The first day of activities took place on October 25 2023 at the Prime Plaza Hotel, Sanur, where almost 100 participants presented the results of their research on relevant themes including Media, Communication and Innovation; The Ethics of AI and Automation; Communicating Sustainability; Media and Crisis Communication; Communicating Environmental Issues and Climate Chang. Present at the opening of the conference, Plt. Chancellor of Udayana University Prof. Ngakan Putu Gede Suardana in his speech appreciated the Communication Studies Program, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Udayana University for collaborating with Multimedia Nusantara University (UMN) in organizing this conference. Apart from that, he said that the current development of internet technology has had an impact on changes in media journalistic practices, which require the media to change the way they work, content production, business models and media organizational structures. Through this conference, it can become a forum for discussion regarding problems in the media and communication sector, especially in the current era of artificial intelligence.
In line with the conference theme, COMNEWS 2023 invited several keynote speakers from various countries to share knowledge, including Prof. Verica Rupar - professor in journalism at Auckland University of Technology and Chair of the World Journalism Education Council, Prof. Axel Bruns - professor at the Digital Media Research Centre, Queensland University of Technology, Prof. Claes de Vreese - professor in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Society, University of Amsterdam and President of the International Communication Association 2020-2021, and Noshir Contractor - professor from Northwestern University in the area of social communication networks and President of the International Communication Association 2022-2023. The first day of COMNEWS 2023 closed with a Gala Dinner together.
Samsara Living Museum The Circle of Balinese Life was the venue for the second day of COMNEWS 2023 activities. On October 26 2023, participants and the 2023 COMNEWS Committee visited the Samsara Living Museum, Jungutan Village, Banyakem, Karangasem, which is located very close to the foot of Mount Agung. Upon arrival at the location, the participants were immediately given a scarf to tie around their waist as a symbol of binding the five buddhi senses and the five karmen senses before entering the museum area, then they were served a traditional herbal drink turmeric tamarind as a welcome drink.
The activity continued with an explanation of the basic concept of the reason this museum existed, starting from concerns about modernization which was eroding Balinese customs and culture. Moreover, it is now rarely understood, especially by the younger generation. It was also stated that this tourist and educational tourism attraction stretches across an area of 80 acres or 8,000 square meters, containing open green space and several traditional buildings, one of which is a museum. In the museum, 14 series of Hindu ceremonies are explained which are presented in the form of photos along with explanations and equipment in the museum. Starting from various values and traditions that are inherent since the baby is in the womb, then birth into the world, life and death, even until uniting with Ida Sanghyang Widhi Wasa and achieving perfection. The concept of the Samsara Museum is to reconstruct the series of Balinese human birth cycles. Where everything is framed in ritual, means of upakara. And the meaning behind these symbols becomes practical information that can enrich your experience.
After leaving the building, visitors will be invited to do activities while witnessing the lives of the people who live in the museum. Of the total of 100 local residents or 30-40 heads of families involved, some of them live and carry out all activities at the museum. Next, the participants were directed to watch the daily activities of the local community. Starting from making tetabuhan facilities (arak, brem), pounding rice, sewing, painting Balinese characters, and also making Balinese satay lilit.
After being given education about the stages of life which reflect the wisdom of Jungutan Village, tourists will be shown the names in the family tree in Bali. This experience shows that Hindus in Bali always record their origins and who their ancestors were. A trip through every corner of the Samsara Living Museum which displays various objects, traditions, attractions and various types of rare plants will take us back to the great ancestral civilization with deep values of philosophy, culture and local wisdom.
